It’s no secret that the Japanese carmaker Mazda is heading for the premium segment. The models already have a well-crafted interior and Mazda vehicles are also characterized by higher quality. In the future, however, a new platform with a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive has been developed for full-fledged premium models. The first of this architecture will be the Mazda CX-60 SUV, whose debut is scheduled for March 8. Meanwhile, there is a general picture of how Mazda will work in the new segment for itself.

Jeremy Thomson, head of the company’s British division, told Autocar. Mazda does not intend to compete with German premium brands. It is useless to compete with them. However, the company is convinced that there is a place in the market for the so-called Japanese premium. The main player in this conditional segment remains Lexus, which is represented almost worldwide. It is from him that Mazda intends to grab a piece of market pie. Of course, there are Infiniti and Acura, but they are not sold in Europe, so Jeremy Thomson did not mention them.

Thomson considers car quality, design and a wealth of standard equipment to be the main trump cards in the fight for premium buyers. Here, Mazda intends to beat its Japanese competitors. The company is also developing electrification of the model line, without which it is no longer anywhere in Europe. By the end of 2023, Mazda will introduce five hybrids, five plug-in hybrids and three electric vehicles.
